The male and female winners of the just concluded CBN Senior Tennis Championship in Abuja; Nonso Madurke and Marylove Edwards have both claimed that they were satisfied with their victories on Saturday.
Madueke won the male singles title on Saturday at the Parkage B of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja after a stunning comeback against Henry Atseye in the final match.
Madueke, was trailing his opponent after the first set loosing 2-6 bounced back in the next two sets to claim the championship’s top prize. Meanwhile, the victory became visible after Atseye retired injured pave wave for a 0-2 down in the third set.
In the same vain, Marylove Edwards, female singles title winner at the 44th CBN Senior National Tennis Open Tournament, defeated number three seed Aiyegbusi 6-3 6-4 to emerge winner in the final match of their event.
Edwards had battled past long-time rival Oyinlomo Quadri earlier in the semi-finals, before she rounded up her efforts with victory against the eventual runner-up, Aiyegbusi.
She had to bounce back from a set down to beat the tournament’s number three seed 1-6 6-2 6-4 at the end of an energy-sapping encounter.
However, Edwards claimed the performance of Aanu Aiyegbusi in the final match on Saturday really amazed her. Meanwhile, the governor of the central bank , Godwin Emefiele has said that the objective of the apex bank on sponsoring the championship has been met, saying that within the last 44 years of sponsorship a lot of talents have been discovered nutured and are currently representing the nation in international tennis events.
Represented at the closing ceremony of the six- day-old event, Dr Isa Abdulmumi said the CBN will continue to sponsor the Championship and keep engaging the youths positively.The president of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, Dayo Akindoju on his part, commended the CBN for it’s continuous partnership and sponsoring of the championship which in tye time past has helped the federation to discovered tennis players who have represented and are still representing the country.
