Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions. (ASURI) on Friday pickets the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) over it’s alleged intimidation and plans to sack the branch officials of the Union in the Institute..
The union led by its General Dr. Theophilus Ndubiaku stormed the institute headquarters in Abuja while an alleged secret disciplinary meeting was ongoing at the conference room of the institute and was been presided by its Director General, Dr Bakut Bakut.
ASURI general secretary, Dr Ndubuaka said in an interview with journalists that the union could no longer bear the level of intimidation, harassment and plot to sack their branch officials in the institute with the aim of withal the activities of the union in the institute, the need for the picketing.
“We, the Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions (ASURI), representing the interests of Research Fellows in Federal Research and Development Institutes, Inter-University Centres, Colleges and Allied Agencies, write to demand the immediate removal from office of the Director General/Chief Executive of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Dr. Bakut Tswah Bakut, for his gross incompetence as demonstrated by abysmal ignorance of the mandate of IPCR, and the immediate setting up of a Ministerial Visitation Panel to investigate his activities.
“As key stakeholders in the Research and Development Institutes (RDI) sector and watchers of the Institute, we can say it authoritatively and with all emphasis at our command that Dr. Bakut has turned IPCR into and institute for generating conflict, rather than resolving conflict and with him at the helm of affairs, how can IPCR proffer any solution to the myriad of conflicts bedeviling the nation today? Rather than concentrating on the mandate of IPCR as a think tank on conflict resolution, especially at a time like this, he is dissipating so much energy on victimizing and intimidating labour leaders and interfering in trade union activities, in gross contravention of labour laws,” he said.
However, ASURI demanded Dr. Bakut immediate removal from office before he causes the Federal Government further embarrassment. And also demanded that a Ministerial Visitation Panel to investigate the activities of Dr. Bakut at IPCR
Meanwhile, effort to speak with Dr. Bakut (DG IPCR) proved abortive as he was not willing to speak rather urges the journalists who waited to get his side of the story to write whatever they feel
