Abuja (Core Reporters) The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations of political interference in the leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC), insisting that the ruling party has no involvement in the legal dispute that resulted in the removal of the Senator David Mark-led factional leadership of the opposition party.
The APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the ADC should take responsibility for its internal leadership crisis rather than blame the ruling party for unfavourable court decisions.
Morka, in a statement, accused the David Mark-led faction of selectively embracing the judiciary, arguing that the ADC praises the courts whenever judgments favour it but accuses the APC of collusion and undermining the judiciary when decisions go against it.
He described the attitude as contradictory, saying it reflected the party’s disregard for the independence and authority of the judiciary.
According to him, the APC is neither a party to the legal dispute nor an interlocutor in the matter, stressing that the ruling party has no role in the ADC’s judicial challenges.
Morka explained that the case originated from a legal challenge instituted by some national officers of the ADC over what he described as the alleged takeover of the party’s leadership by Mark and his associates to advance former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition.
He alleged that the takeover violated the rule of law and the ADC’s internal democratic processes, adding that the court had now affirmed the illegality of the actions.
The APC spokesman said the judgment delivered on Wednesday by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which removed the David Mark-led leadership, was a consequence of the faction’s alleged disregard for due process.
He added that the judgment also nullified official actions taken by the factional leadership, including its primary election processes and outcomes.
Morka maintained that the ruling demonstrated the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the independence of the judiciary.
He advised the ADC to exercise its constitutional right of appeal if dissatisfied with the judgment instead of engaging in what he described as partisan attacks against the APC and making statements capable of inciting political tension.
The APC spokesman further questioned the ADC’s capacity to provide credible leadership at the national level, arguing that a party unable to resolve its internal disputes could hardly be trusted to govern the country effectively.
He said the APC and the administration of President Bola Tinubu remained committed to protecting Nigeria’s democracy, upholding the rule of law and delivering good governance.
Morka added that the ruling party would not be distracted by what he described as the opposition’s provocative rhetoric.
