APC Blames ADC Crisis on Internal Disputes, Urges Adherence to Rule of Law

By Admin

The National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in reaction to the African Democracy Congress (ADC) world press conference on Thursday has dismissed allegations from a faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), attributing the party’s ongoing crisis to internal disagreements over its leadership structure.

Speaking at a press conference on Friday, the APC National Secretary, Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, described the claims by the faction aligned with former Senate President David Mark as a misinterpretation of ongoing legal proceedings concerning the ADC’s leadership tussle.

Basiru stressed that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu does not have the constitutional authority to deregister political parties or interfere in their internal affairs. He noted that Nigeria has multiple registered political parties eligible to participate in elections, underscoring the independence of the country’s democratic system.

According to the APC, the leadership dispute within the ADC is already before the courts, including the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. Basiru stated that the appellate court had dismissed an appeal filed by the David Mark-led faction and directed all parties to maintain the status quo pending the determination of the substantive case at the trial court.

He explained that the directive was intended to preserve order and prevent actions that could complicate the judicial process. The APC further maintained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) acted appropriately by remaining neutral and implementing the court’s directive.

Basiru added that any party dissatisfied with INEC’s interpretation of the court ruling should seek redress through legal channels rather than engage in public disputes that could escalate tensions.

The ruling party also cautioned against unguarded public commentary about INEC, emphasizing that the commission operates within constitutional limits and makes decisions collectively.

On the issue of planned congresses and conventions within the ADC, the APC reiterated that all parties involved in the litigation must comply with the court’s order to maintain the status quo until the case is resolved.

The party emphasized that respect for judicial processes is vital to sustaining democratic stability, noting that court decisions remain binding until overturned by a competent court of law.

Basiru further advised political parties facing internal crises to prioritize dialogue and lawful mechanisms in resolving disputes, adding that such challenges are common in democratic systems and can be addressed through institutional frameworks.

The APC reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles, respect for institutions, and peaceful political engagement as Nigeria prepares for future electoral activities.
