Akpabio declares Okpebholo’s senate seat vacant following Senator Abba Moro’s letter
Abuja (Core Reporters) The senate president Godswill Akpabio on. Wednesday declared vacant senate seat of the governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who hitherto represented Edo Central Senatorial District in the senate.
During the valedictory session held in honour of the governor, Senator Akpabio, reading a letter submitted by the Senate Minority Leader, Comrade Abba Moro PhD, declared the seat vacant and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a by-election to fill the vacancy.
In the letter submitted to the President of the Senate, Senator Abba Moro PhD had emphasized the requirements of Section 68(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which states that a federal lawmaker’s seat becomes vacant upon his/her assumption of another public office and called on the Senate President to notify INEC to organize a fresh election for the senatorial district.
Accordingly, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio declared the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo, Governor of Edo State vacant. Senator Okpebholo and Hon. Idahosa have since been inaugurated as governor and deputy governor respectively following the conduct of the September 21 2024 governorship election in Edo state.
