Academic Staff Union of Universities , Nasarawa State University Keffi, branch has again took to the street in a peaceful rally, in solidarity with staff of the Federal Universities and expressed displeasure with the Federal Government of Nigeria over none payments of the Eight months salaries in full.
Dr Samuel Alu, the ASUU branch chairman said the rally was stage to prove to the Federal Government and particularly Mr President, Mohammadu Buhari and the Labour Minister, Dr Chris Ngige that the academia can not be trivialised and reduced to the level of brick layers.
He said there is no where in the world where Universities lecturers are paid as wages ” A wage is money paid to a worker on daily basis, so you can not pay professors or lecturers in wages. A situation where professors and lecturers are paid according to the numbers of days they worked, is proration anf is totally rejected by ASUU.
” We can not accept this kind of maltreatment.This is barbaric ,draconian and wicked, to reduce what somebody have actually worked for, now they have backed up their actions with an argument that lecturers did not actually worked from February 14 to October 13, 2022. I make bold to say that there is no lecturer in Nigeria University that have cancelled a session” He pointed out.
Coraborating, ex-officio of ASUU in Nasarawa State University, Professors Theophilus Lagi and Tanimu Yusuf respectively said they won’t fold their hands while a government which claimed to introduced change in the Nigeria system, deliberately working against the progress of it populace.
They said” it is shameful,wicked and senseless for a government to orchestrate the down fall of education, so we will never accept it.The public should know that as lecturers we respected the judgment of the court but the Federal Government has failed to keep to agreement with ASUU. There is no best worker in the country than the teacher.
The protest which was led by the branch chairman of the union from the ASUU Secretariat to the round about in front of the vice Chancellor block, was also flanked by a few students, who carried placards with inscriptions that reads,” Teachers, teach the nation, but Nigerians cheat teacher.Pro-Rata payments of salaries is illegal, draconian and barbaric. ASUU, NSUK rejects proration of University workers.
