NISO Explains Causes of Decline in National Grid Power Generation
By Our Reporter
Abuja (Core Reporters) – The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has attributed the current decline in electricity generation on the national grid to constraints in gas supply to thermal power plants and reduced output from hydroelectric power stations.
The System Operator disclosed this in a press release issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026, explaining that limited gas availability has constrained the capacity of affected thermal generating stations to operate at their available levels.
It also identified reduced water inflows into reservoirs as a major factor affecting the generation capacity of hydroelectric power stations.
According to NISO, the combined effect of these challenges has reduced the quantum of electricity available for allocation to Distribution Companies (DisCos) for onward supply to consumers.
The development has consequently resulted in shorter hours of electricity supply and increased load shedding across distribution networks, with the level of impact varying according to available generation and the corresponding allocations to individual DisCos.
NISO acknowledged the hardship the current generation shortfall has imposed on electricity consumers nationwide, while appreciating the concerns expressed by members of the public and other stakeholders.
The operator said it was actively working towards diversifying the energy mix for the national grid to strengthen energy security and ensure a more reliable electricity supply.
It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining grid stability, optimising the dispatch of available generation and ensuring the secure, reliable and efficient operation of the national grid within prevailing operational constraints.
