The Day Uburu Stood Still for Umahi: Homecoming Turns into Show of Love, Political Endorsement
By Ralph Ekpang
Uburu (Core Reporters) For a community accustomed to welcoming its illustrious sons, November 2, 2026, was no ordinary day in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
From different corners of the community, residents trooped out in their thousands, turning what was expected to be a quiet homecoming into a spontaneous celebration of one of their most prominent sons, the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi.
It was a reception without the usual trappings of a formally organised political rally. Rather, it was an expression of affection, pride and solidarity as men, women, youths and community stakeholders gathered to welcome the former Ebonyi State governor after his series of engagements with stakeholders in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The excitement was unmistakable. For the people of Uburu and the wider Ohaozara community, the occasion offered an opportunity to celebrate Umahi’s journey from local politics to the national stage, particularly his appointment as Minister of Works by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Beyond the excitement of seeing their son return home, however, the gathering carried a deeper political message: an endorsement of the President’s decision to entrust Umahi with one of the most demanding portfolios in the Federal Executive Council and an expression of confidence in the administration’s infrastructure agenda.
For many of those present, Umahi’s ministerial appointment represents more than an individual political achievement. It is also a source of pride for a community that believes one of its own has been given an opportunity to influence national development.
Speakers at the gathering, including Onu Okorie, Prince Mathew and Comrade Kingsley Obini, alongside other prominent stakeholders, took turns to express their appreciation for the Minister’s service and acknowledge the opportunities his appointment has created for him to contribute to the country.
Their remarks reflected a common sentiment: that Umahi’s elevation to the Federal Executive Council has brought renewed attention to the South-East and provided the region with a strong voice in the country’s infrastructure development.
But perhaps the most significant issue that resonated throughout the gathering was the condition of federal roads and bridges across the South-East.
For years, poor road infrastructure has remained a major concern for residents, commuters, traders and business operators in the region. Bad roads have affected the movement of people and goods, increased transportation costs and placed additional pressure on businesses and local economies.
Against this background, the appointment of a former state governor with considerable experience in road construction and infrastructure development to head the Federal Ministry of Works was described by the residents as a significant opportunity.
They commended President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in Umahi, expressing the hope that his position would translate into more visible federal infrastructure investments across the South-East and other parts of the country.
The residents also linked their appreciation to what they described as the infrastructure development drive of the Tinubu administration, insisting that the opportunity given to Umahi to serve at the national level deserved recognition and support.
The political undertone of the reception was equally unmistakable.
In separate remarks, community stakeholders declared their support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, making it clear that their endorsement was informed, in part, by the President’s appointment of Umahi and the administration’s infrastructure development efforts.
Their position suggested that, beyond party affiliations and political calculations, the people of Uburu and Ohaozara were increasingly viewing infrastructure delivery and political representation as important considerations in determining their support ahead of the next general election.
For Umahi, the reception was a reminder of the political and emotional connections that remain important in his home community, even as his responsibilities now extend across Nigeria.
Having served as Governor of Ebonyi State before moving to the national stage, his political journey has continued to place him at the centre of conversations about the South-East’s representation in the Federal Government.
The November 2 gathering therefore provided an opportunity for his people to celebrate his achievements, acknowledge his current responsibilities and publicly express their expectations of what his position could mean for their community and the region.
Although the reception was spontaneous and unofficial, its size and political message gave it the character of a major homecoming event.
As the crowd gathered to celebrate their son, one message stood out: Uburu was proud of Umahi, appreciative of the opportunity President Tinubu had given him and hopeful that the minister’s influence would continue to attract development to the South-East.
And with the 2027 general election drawing closer, the reception also offered a glimpse into how infrastructure, political appointments and the politics of recognition could shape conversations around voter support in Ebonyi State and beyond.
For one day, the attention of Uburu was firmly on David Umahi. But beyond the celebration, the gathering was also about the expectations of a community looking to its son in a position of national responsibility to help deliver a better development story for his people.
