Ibadan (Core Reporters) – The Oyo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an attack on a group of people welcoming Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat back to Ibadan, which left one person dead.
The incident occurred shortly after the group departed Molete for Iwo Road, where the Agidigbo office is located, following an attack allegedly carried out by suspected hoodlums.
According to a report lodged at a police station on October 14, 2026, by Kehinde Samuel Ibikunle, one of the victims, identified as Azeez Tajudeen, 40, sustained a severe injury to his right eye during the attack.
Tajudeen, a native of Oke Amu in Otesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, was immediately rushed for medical attention before being taken to the State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, where he was examined and confirmed dead.
His remains have since been deposited at the hospital morgue.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, directed that the case be transferred to the Command Monitoring Unit for a thorough and discreet investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
The police said the investigation was aimed at identifying and apprehending those responsible for the incident and ensuring that they were brought to justice.
The Command also stressed the need for adequate security coordination ahead of public gatherings and processions.
It consequently urged political aspirants, party leaders and event organisers to formally notify the police at least 48 hours before any planned procession or gathering to enable the provision of adequate security and prevent breaches of public peace.
The police further appealed to members of the public with credible information that could assist the investigation to come forward and cooperate with investigators.
