The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Tony Ojukwu (SAN) has tasked the Federal government on the need to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians workers

Ojukwu  bemoans the plight of the workers and  called on  relevant authorities to seek  improvement of the existing working conditions of Nigerian workers.

Ojukwu, made this call in a statement commemorating the 2024 International Workers Day, which is observed globally, every May 1.

The learned silk, while celebrating the achievements and resilience of workers, stated in clear terms that the essential role played by workers in shaping societies and economies globally, can not be overemphasized.

A statement by the Director, Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Obinna Nwakonye said, the NHRC’s scribe noted that the 2024  International Day of Workers underscored the resilience, dedication and sacrifice of Nigerian workers particularly in the face of unprecedented high cost of living in Nigeria.

In his words, the Nigeria Chief rights officer reaffirmed the Commission’s position, stating that ” the NHRC remains unwavering in its commitment to advocating for the rights of all Nigerians, including workers”.

Continuing, Ojukwu urged the Government to consider the widespread agitation for wage increase and to equally address other areas such  as  high cost of goods,  poor power supply, transportation,  healthcare, insecurity and others.

Speaking further, Dr. Ojukwu noted that, from ensuring workers enjoy fair wages, safe working conditions, combating discrimination  and exploitation of workers, the Commission remains dedicated in creating a comfortable environment where all workers will be treated with respect and dignity.

This year’s theme “Climate change, safety and Health at work place”,  resonates deeply with the NHRC’S mandate of promoting and protecting the rights of all Nigerians, including their right to  upholding the well being, safety and the dignity of workers in all Sectors.

The Executive Secretary wished Nigerian workers well as they celebrate the workers day 2024.
