76-Year After Tinubu Commissions ₦280bn Bodo-Bonny Road, Approves 8.9km Extension to East-West Road
By Our Reporter
Port Harcourt (Core Reporters) – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned the historic 37.9-kilometre Bodo-Bonny Road in Rivers State, bringing to fruition a 76-year-old dream conceived in 1950 but left unrealised by successive administrations.
The commissioning took place on Saturday, November 7, 2026, during the Presidential Campaign Council event at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.
The ₦280 billion project provides Bonny Island with a direct road connection to Bodo and the wider national road network, ending decades of dependence on water transportation for access to other parts of the state.
The road features approximately three kilometres of bridges across the Opobo Channel, representing a major engineering component of the project.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Works, Senator Engr. David Umahi, expressed excitement over the completion of the project, describing it as the fulfilment of a long-standing aspiration of the people of Bonny and surrounding communities.
Umahi disclosed that President Tinubu had gone beyond completing the original project by approving an additional 8.9-kilometre dual carriageway extension to connect the Bodo-Bonny Road to the East-West Road.
According to the minister, the extension will translate to 17.8 kilometres of carriageway, to be constructed using reinforced concrete pavement technology.
He explained that the additional infrastructure would improve road connectivity, ease transportation and create greater economic opportunities for communities and businesses along the corridor.
The minister put the average construction cost at approximately ₦7.4 billion per kilometre, noting that the extensive bridges across the Opobo Channel contributed significantly to the engineering requirements and overall cost of the project.
The completion of the Bodo-Bonny Road marks a major milestone in efforts to improve transportation infrastructure in the Niger Delta, particularly in connecting Bonny Island, an important economic and industrial hub, to the national road network.
