Rivers State Ministry of Sports says sports journalists remain partners in progress in the growth and development of the sector.
A representative of the Ministry, Mr Daniel Nwankwoala stated this at the presentation of palliative to members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Rivers State chapter.
He went down memory lane in recognising the efforts of sports journalists in shaping opinions, policies and activities of government over the years.
According to him, sports journalists represent a mirror through which government officials look at issues and determine the kind of actions to take in order to make the sector better.
Nwankwoala, who is also the Media Officer of the Ministry, conveyed the assurances of the Commissioner, Hon Boma Iyaye and the Permanent Secretary, Sir Honour Sirawoo in their quest to take sports to greater heights in the state.
“As a responsive and responsible Ministry, we deemed it fit to reach out to members of SWAN in these challenging times. It is just a token from us but be rest assured that we are with you,” he stressed.
Responding, the Acting Chairman of SWAN in Rivers State, Mr Olalekan Ige thanked the Commissioner of Sports in the state, Hon Boma Iyaye and Permanent Secretary, Sir Honour Sirawoo for their kind gesture.
According to him, the Ministry of Sports is the first to send palliative to sports journalists in the state, saying it reflects the care and concern of the management team.
“As it is always said, the smallest deed is better than the greatest intention. This means a lot to us and we are indeed very grateful for this kind gesture,” he stated.
He called on other public-spirited organisations and corporate bodies to emulate the Rivers State Ministry of Sports.
