ICPC, Xinhua Explore Media Partnership to Boost Nigeria-China Anti-Corruption Cooperation
By Our Reporter
Abuja (Core Reporters) The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and China’s state-owned news agency, Xinhua, are exploring a strategic media partnership aimed at strengthening information exchange, enhancing public communication and promoting cross-border cooperation in the fight against corruption.
The proposed partnership was discussed when a delegation of media professionals from Xinhua, led by its Deputy President for Africa, Mr. Gui Tao, visited the ICPC headquarters in Abuja, where they met with the Commission’s Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu (SAN.)
The meeting focused on opportunities for collaboration in news sharing, professional training, technology transfer and the dissemination of information on anti-corruption initiatives to a wider international audience.
Xinhua, China’s official state news agency, operates an extensive global news network, including a significant presence across Africa. In Nigeria, the agency covers developments in economic growth, trade, culture and social progress, while engaging local media organisations to promote information exchange and mutual understanding.
Speaking during the meeting, Gui Tao emphasised the importance of accurate and balanced reporting in promoting international cooperation.
He expressed Xinhua’s readiness to collaborate with the ICPC in projecting the Commission’s anti-corruption activities and achievements to a global audience, noting that corruption is a transnational challenge requiring cooperation across national boundaries.
In his remarks, Aliyu described the proposed partnership as an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria-China relations and support efforts to combat corruption, particularly illicit financial flows and the cross-border movement of proceeds of crime.
The ICPC chairman also highlighted the media’s role in shaping public perception, raising awareness and mobilising citizens to support the fight against corruption.
He called on Xinhua to assist the Commission in strengthening its media and public communication capacity through technology transfer and professional training for personnel of its Media and Public Communications Unit.
According to him, such capacity-building initiatives would improve information dissemination and increase the international visibility of the Commission’s activities.
In response, Gui Tao reaffirmed Xinhua’s willingness to provide technical support and training opportunities for ICPC media personnel.
He said the agency’s global media platform could help showcase Nigeria’s anti-corruption reforms and achievements to international audiences, adding that the proposed collaboration would be mutually beneficial and anchored on shared values of integrity and public accountability.
The proposed partnership is expected to expand the ICPC’s international media reach, promote awareness of Nigeria’s anti-corruption initiatives and deepen cooperation between Nigeria and China in media engagement, governance and the rule of law.
