NHRC Orders Immediate Investigation into Alleged Unprofessional Conduct at Uyo Office

By Goodness Ekpang

Abuja (Core Reporters) – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has ordered an immediate investigation into allegations of unprofessional conduct by personnel at its Akwa Ibom State office in Uyo following the circulation of a video on social media.

The Commission, which expressed serious concern over the allegations, stressed that its personnel must treat every complainant with dignity, respect and professionalism, regardless of the circumstances.

In a statement issued by its Director of Corporate Affairs and External Linkages, Fatimah Agwai Mohammed, the NHRC said its professional standards do not permit the mistreatment of complainants, even when its personnel are provoked.

“Protecting human rights begins with how we treat those who seek our help. Every complainant must be treated with dignity, respect and professionalism,” the Commission stated.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, (SAN) has directed an immediate investigation to establish the facts surrounding the incident.

The statement added that appropriate administrative action would be taken in accordance with extant rules if any infraction was established.

Reaffirming its commitment to accessible, free, timely and accountable service delivery, the Commission urged members of the public experiencing difficulties accessing its offices to report such concerns through its toll-free line, 6472.

The Commission reiterated the importance of maintaining professional standards in the discharge of its mandate to protect and promote human rights across the country.
