AIG Ewah Says Mob Action is Criminal Offence, Warns Residents of Oyo and Osun States
By Our Reporter
Osogbo (Core Reporters) The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 11 Headquarters, Osogbo, AIG Bassey Samuel Ewah, has condemned mob action and the unlawful killing of suspected offenders, warning residents of Osun and Oyo States that taking the law into their own hands is a criminal act and not a form of justice.
The warning follows the disturbing incident in the Sabo area of Oyo, Oyo State, on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, where a suspected motorcycle thief was allegedly set ablaze by an irate mob after being apprehended over an alleged attempt to steal a motorcycle.
The AIG described the incident as a tragic and unacceptable act of lawlessness, stressing that no allegation of criminal conduct, regardless of its perceived seriousness, gives any individual or group the right to assault, torture, or kill a suspect. He emphasised that every suspect is entitled to due process, and anyone alleged to have committed an offence must be handed over to the Police for investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.
The AIG called on community leaders, traditional rulers, youth organisations, transport unions, market associations, and other stakeholders to join the Police in sensitising members of the public against jungle justice. He also encouraged residents to promptly report suspected criminal activities to the nearest Police station or appropriate security agency rather than resorting to violence
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, Zone 11 Headquarters, to protecting lives and property, maintaining law and order, and ensuring that offenders are brought to justice through lawful means. He assured the public that the Police would continue to investigate incidents of mob violence and pursue anyone found culpable in accordance with the law.
Ewah therefore appealed to all residents of Osun and Oyo States to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant, and to cooperate with security agencies in building peaceful and secure communities.
